2009 Avera Parade of Lights
Recently the Sioux Council kicked off the holiday season and the celebration of Scouting’s 100th
Anniversary with a float in the Sioux Falls Avera Parade of Lights. The float was an 8-foot high
birthday cake and was led through the parade by over 70 Scouts and Scouters. The float was powered by Xcel Energy, who generously donated the use of a company truck and trailer for our use for the parade. Along the parade route, the Scouts handed out 1200 popcorn packages that promoted the Scouting program and provided information on how to join the Scouting program.
The float was designed so that it can continue to be used in parades or as a public display of the
celebration of Scouting’s anniversary. If you are interested in using the float for your local parade or event contact the Center for Scouting to reserve the float for your event.
Thank you to all the dedicated Scouts and Scouters who spent many nights and weekends working to create an exciting and impressive display of Scouting for the community. A special thanks as well to all the enthusiastic Scouts and Scouters that participated in the parade. Your efforts helped create a float that was selected by the parade judges as the entry with the “Best Use of Lights!” Thanks again to all involved and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s parade.
